Katharine McPhee went back to brunette. (Finally!) And she’s clearly growing out that short cut, too. Good move because that platinum blonde color was just not working on her. Word is that she went back to her natural color for a acting job. Katharine will be playing a girl-next-door pharmaceutical rep in the NBC comedy pilot The Pink House, which shoots this month.

“It’s always nice to have a reason to go back,” Katharine told People of the change. “I loved having blonde hair–it’s so much fun.” But she admits there is one thing she won’t miss about the shade: “Blonde was pretty hard on my hair,” she says. “I guess my hair is thanking me now!”

Katharine McPhee is still rocking the short, blonde hair. But now she’s wearing it wavy, with more volume. Something about the style and how it’s sitting on her head, looks kind of artificial to me.

Do you guys like this style better than the slicked down look? Or her flat ironed style? I think Katharine’s best short style was still her first look, which was wavy but shorter and pulled away from her gorgeous face.

Katharine McPhee still hasn’t gotten her hair cut. I can tell because she opted to slick it back at the 37th International Emmy Awards gala in NYC yesterday (Nov. 23). She wore a one shoulder Marchesa dress that I’m not crazy about, but it could be worse. And she’s still doing the pale lipstick thing, which makes her look so washed out. As long as I’m being picky: hate those shoes. I do like her winged eyeliner and overall she’s so pretty that I really shouldn’t complain about anything that’s going on here, but I have a blog and that’s what I do.

Katharine McPhee (and her still-blonde hair and shorter ‘do) headed out to last night’s VH1 Save the Music Big Shopping Holiday Event in NYC.

Katharine recently told People it’s definitely more fun to be blonde, but it’s also more work. To maintain her platinum locks, Katharine has to visit her colorist, “every three-and-a-half, four weeks. Right now I’m almost at the too dark roots stage,” she says. “So I get to play around with hats.” Her short cut is also relatively new. “Peter Savitt cuts my hair. This is the same haircut I had during Fashion Week, but it’s just been growing out and I’ve been flattening it.”

You can totally tell that this is a grown out cut and that Katharine is flat ironing it. It looks flat ironed. It’s too stick-straight and appears straw like. The shape would look better if it had some volume, movement and texture in it. Maybe she could air dry it a bit or dry it with a volumizing product. It’s. just. so. flat. Also, she should just go in to see her stylist and have him shape it up a bit for her. Also, her hair looks sort of unhealthy, which could be from the frequent coloring and the heat processing. She needs a good deep conditioner. (By the way, should we set an extension clock on Katharine? As soon as she thinks she’s gotten all the press that she can get out of this short hair/platinum story, she’s totally putting in extensions!)

A lace patterned skirt and lace patterned tights? Um, no. Also, the exact shade of red tights and red boots? I think I would have opted for something in a similar but different shade…

What do you think of Katharine McPhee’s new(ish) short blonde hair? She looks better as a brunette, in my opinion, but I get the fact that she wants to try new things. Katharine dished to popeater about the new look.

On whether or not the dye-job was spur of the moment, Katharine says, “I can’t say it wasn’t calculated because I didn’t want it to be a complete disaster and have my hair fall out, but it was a natural thing to do. I always wanted to know what it was like to have blond hair. People get complacent and know you as the girl with long brown curly hair. People always say ‘Oh, your hair is so beautiful and curly.’ Really, my hair is completely pin-straight. I have no wave in my hair. So this image gets created, which is great because then people identify you, but I just wanted to turn things upside down. I felt like seeing what it was like to be blond with short hair and doing something people wouldn’t expect. It’s fun. Now I wake up in the morning and look in the mirror and see a different person. Maybe six months from now it will be a redhead.”

When asked if people act different toward her now that she’s a blonde, Katharine says, “I wish that was the case. I always thought blondes got more attention walking down the street. I’m like ‘That guy totally checked her out and didn’t notice me and I’m wearing higher heels!’ But, I haven’t really noticed a difference at all and the reason is I’m not a true blonde. Only true blondes get the real attention.”

I kind of miss the old Katharine, but my guess is she’ll go back to it soon enough.
