Over on Brig Knows Best, Shear Genius’s Brig explains how she achieves her unique shade of Playskool yellow hair. Every four weeks Brig has to retouch her base color to warm up her natural color and lighten it a shade. On top of that, pale highlights are added. A yellow semi-permanent is also added to all of her hair. Because the yellow is a semi-permanent and some of it washes out each shampoo, Brig re-glazes all of her hair with the yellow every one-and-a-half to two weeks.

Brig also recommends asking your stylist to lock in the color using a “sealer” when they finish glazing. The sealer is put over the glaze at the shampoo bowl and left on for five minutes. At home, Brig recommends washing with cool water since warm water will lift your hair’s top cuticle layer allowing the color to fade faster.

And finally, here is Brig’s formula. Although it’s always worth noting that your existing color and natural hair color will always affect the coloring results, so don’t expect to achieve Brig’s exact color with this formula. And if you’re not a professional, you should probably go to a professional, unless you’re alright with hair surprises! Anyway, here is the color formula for those that are curious:

• Brig’s natural level: 7/8
• Base formula: ISO i-color 8G + 20 volume/ 30 minutes
• Highlights: Lightener with 20 volume
• Yellow: Pravana Yellow
• Sealed using: Wella Magma Pure Shine Sealer

It’s Brig Van Osten From Shear Genius! She has a blog call Brig Knows Best. Love her or hate her, Brig is pretty unguarded, which always makes for interesting blog fodder… Will I be interviewing her later this week? Hmm. Only two episodes left!

The super duper adorable Anna-Lee is a HOTB commenter who has her own awesome blog: Anna-Lee and Jesse Do Stuff. I love it. She posts gorgeous fashion pictures, as well as snaps of her and her husband doing stuff around LA. Even better, Anna-Lee happens to be a stylist at Chaz Dean Studio, so she also posts before and after photos of haircuts and even videos! It’s like my dream blog come true. Check out this sped-up video of Anna-Lee and Chaz transforming clients’ hair. So cool.

Freaking out over this one! Here is the deal: You all watch The Rachel Zoe Project right? Yes, duh. So, everyone remembers that last year my favorite sourpuss Taylor Jacobson announced she was departing from Team Zoe. Word is, Rachel Zoe didn’t take Taylor’s decision too well. Shock! Via Fashion Week Daily:

“Rachel Zoe’s reaction to Taylor Jacobson’s parting from her company was far nastier than anyone could have imagined. As soon as Jacobson drafted her goodbye letter to her colleagues and PR contacts, Zoe apparently began masterminding the blacklist campaign against her former assistant. “Rachel went ballistic,” says our well-placed source. “She basically wasn’t happy about Taylor leaving on her own terms and felt like she should have fired Taylor herself. There were a lot of e-mails and calls that were placed to big houses with the intent of keeping Taylor away, which is ironic because Taylor did about 85% of the work in the company.” It got worse. Apparently, Zoe tried to blacklist Taylor from her own hair salon. “Taylor’s stylist called her and said that she could only do her hair from home after a Zoe freak-out,” says another source. Jacobson is currently developing her own styling company.”

Rachel tried to blacklist Taylor from her hair salon? Christ on a celery stick. Please let them have filmed all of this.

In also-fantastic news, Taylor has just launched a new blog, Love, Taylor through Everyday Minerals’ site. I want to help TayTay with her link situation on the blog, because it’s kind of a mess, however, the content is still pretty awesome. I was actually dying to know where she got her sideways cross necklace. And frankly, as much as I love Rachel Zoe, I’d rather pick Taylor’s brain because I feel like she would know where the best spots to shop in LA would be for me. And Rachel Zoe knows where the best places to shop are for … Demi Moore.

So after trying to figure out how I felt about Tavi this week: Genius writer with a unique inner voice who’s been elevated to the rightful spot at the pinnacle of the fashion world? Or a relative child who’s been propelled to the top way before her time because of the freakish novelty? Hmm… And then I read about another young fashion blog, and I felt totally different. It was cool, refreshing, interesting. It was like reading Tavi pre-J.D. Salinger comparisons and Harper’s Bazaar columns.

At first glance the images on Acrylic Nails Photography look like any other edgy fashion photos, the poses cribbed straight off the pages off of Vogue. But with closer inspection, there’s an eerie quality. The models are practically children playing dress up–but they’re really nailing it. The styling, the photography–it’s all amazing. A mirrored image of what the fashion world pumps out, after you’ve tumbled through the looking glass.

The photo blog is shot guerrilla style all over LA by five 14-year-old eighth graders, an after-school pastime they’ve pursed since they were fifth graders. They started out with a camera phone, but have now upgraded to a Canon EOS D5 digital camera, which was given to them by the group’s makeup artist and model, Syd Lynch, from her grandfather, filmmaker David Lynch. Walker Bunting, who created the site, is the stylist and photographer.

Along with generally having a major case of Bangs on the Brain, I’ve also had curly hair/bangs on my mind since one of my curly haired friends mention she was considering bangs, and then HOTB reader Kat mentioned it this week, too. I’ve been looking around for good images of this look ever since. Annabel from the really terrific blog blushing ambition wears her hair straight most of the time, but there are some examples of her hair curly as well.

I think this looks so modern and fresh. I love it. So now I’m kinda obsessed with this look, although my hair is hard to curl. It drops curls super fast, which is annoying.

P.S. My upstairs neighbors are currently blasting christmas music, and it’s raining cats ‘n dogs in L.A.

Oh, you guys, this is so sad. I just noticed that my search traffic for the South Korean supermodel Daul Kim was way up, so I googled her name and found out that she died. Some of you may have already heard about this, but I was off the Internet for a while today, so I missed the news. She hung herself and was found by a friend in her luxury flat in Paris, according to police. Daul had left a series of messages on her website (iliketoforkmyself.blogspot.com) saying she was “lonely” and “depressed”. She was only 20 years old.

Back on October 30, Daul sounded upbeat on her site saying, “I left Seoul and I’m in Paris–I’m happy!” Being in Seoul had made her “mad, depressed and overworked,” she said. The following day she wrote: “No more running away from something or someone or myself.” But her thoughts had apparently changed by November 5, when she wrote: “I already accepted that I relate to nothing. The more I gain the more lonely it is… I know I’m like a ghost.”

And in a final comment on November 18, Daul posted an entry entitled “Say hi to forever” accompanied by a video of the song I Go Deep by British singer Jim Rivers.

I loved Daul’s work as a modeling, art and writing–she had such a unique, beautiful view on the world. What a loss.

Andrea Pippins (graphic designer and blogger) recently launched I Love My Hair, an online boutique where you can purchase her curl-centric prints. Andrea began designing the prints in 2008  as part of a grad school thesis project. I Love My Hair was a campaign to encourage African-American women to love and embrace their naturally coily hair. Now, the prints have evolved into a brand that celebrates those special coils through art and design.

I love Andre’s prints, and I think they would make such awesome gifts. Plus, they’re super reasonably priced, between $25-$30.
