Dominatrix Perfection at Marc Jacobs RTW

On the opposite end of the hair spectrum from yesterday’s post on purposefully fugging up your hair, are the sleek and smooth ponytails at Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 Ready To Wear.

The severe dominatrix inspired ponytails complimented the tough yet ladylike latex, lace, and polka dot fitted silhouettes. There were plenty of tight chin straps and Stephen Jones’ vinyl berets perched atop the models’ heads, so the hair needed to be simple, clean, and perfectly executed. Stylist Guido for Redken told Into The Gloss: “The hair has a kind of perverse, dominatrix perfection. It’s pulled up, very high, very strict, using two products: Blown Away, which is a blow-dry gel, and Shine Flash.”

The makeup was done by none other than François Nars of NARS. “I wanted to do something modern…but what does modern mean these days, anyway? So I just created something interesting and a bit decadent.

“We’re doing eyeliner but in a downward shape, rather than upwards. It’s an ‘upside down’ eye.

“A lot of blush, applied lower on the face, inspired by paintings in the 18th century. It’s a very simple look but a little ‘off’…I never like to do what you’d call ‘normal’; normal is for other people. I like to have fun,” Nars told Into The Gloss.

What do you think of the looks sent down Marc Jacobs’ Fall 2011 RTW runway? Will you be rocking high ponytails, downward eyeliner, polka dots or any other trends shown?

Pretty People Problems

In the February issue of ELLE magazine, the article “Rough Riders” explains how to get matte, dull-looking, “lived-in” hair. You know, that I just woke up, haven’t showered, ratty ponytail look that most of us achieve by waking up and putting our hair in a ponytail. But apparently there are some people with hair SO AMAZING that it takes real effort to fug it up.

This reminds me of an article I read years ago (in Nylon, I think) about how to achieve chipped nail polish. Seriously.

All kidding aside, matte hair done right can look kind of cool. The messy, disheveled look was seen stomping down countless spring/summer 2011 runways, including Calvin Klein, thanks to Redken Creative Consultant Guido Paulo. “Textured, matte hair looks really modern and sexy right now,” Paulo told ELLE. “It’s a little more unkempt and rock ’n’ roll, so it has a certain ease.”

Bumble and bumble is capitalizing on the trend by releasing a new styling product Bb. Texture Hair (un)Dressing Creme in March 2011. Bb. Texture is specifically designed to create these matte, bedhead styles in one step. “We started seeing that sort of hand-done, second-day-hair look on the streets and on celebrities like Alexa Chung and Mary-Kate Olsen a couple of seasons ago,” the company’s senior artistic director, Howard McClaren told ELLE, “but stylists were having to use a combination of products–usually surf spray, hair powder, and styling cream–to reproduce it for shows. So we thought, there’s a real need here for something completely new.”

Bb. Texture has the moldable hold of a gel, but separates and moisturizes like a cream. It has a dry texture with no stickiness and provides volume. Bumble and bumble stylist Jordan M. recommends running Bb. Texture from roots to ends through wet hair before blow-drying it with a diffuser, or working it into just the roots of hair “to bump up body and give it that just-rolled-out-of-bed look.”

“The whole idea is to look like you couldn’t care less. Even though, of course, you do,” “McClaren says.

What do you think of this matte and messy hair trend? Will you try Bumble and bumble’s Bb. Texture?

(Check out ELLE‘s article here, and keep an eye on Bumble and bumble for the release of Bb. Texture in March.)

Joico K-Pak Color Therapy

As previously discussed on Hair On The Brain, one of my all-time favorite secret weapon hair products is Joico K-Pak Deep Penetrating Reconstructor, so I was excited to try out Joico’s K-Pak Color Therapy Shampoo & Conditioner.

Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Shampoo is great for those with color treated hair or if you’re simply looking for a moisturizing, gentle shampoo. My hair is dry mid-shaft through the ends, but gets oily at the roots since I work out, so I need to shampoo that cleanses well but doesn’t dry out my hair. This shampoo works really well on my fine hair. It’s gentle and doesn’t strip my hair or weigh it down. It didn’t give me much volume, but it left my hair very soft and smooth. And I like the scent a lot better than the fragrance of the K-Pak Reconstructor, which I only tolerate because it works so well, but I hate its banana fruity smell! (I have an overall issue with fake banana scent dating back to a bad childhood memory involving some liquid medication. So gross!)

Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Conditioner is nicely moisturizing but not too heavy. It rinses clean and doesn’t weigh my hair down. My demi-permanent hair color always seems to start to fade within about a month or two no matter what I do, and I haven’t noticed a major different with fade time using this line. However, I was using color-safe products beforehand, as well. But I would repurchase Joico K-Pak Color Therapy when my samples run out because of how soft and smooth my hair feels when I use these products! I’ve been really impressed with everything I’ve tried from Joico and I’m planning on purchasing K-Pak Color Therapy Restorative Oil because I’ve heard many good things about it. Have any of you tried it? Yay or Nay?

And stay tuned because Michelle (who reviewed the GKhair Taming System for HOTB) will soon be reviewing Joico’s new K-PAK ReconstrRx VaporIron! Since Michelle is back to flat ironing her hair daily, I thought she’d be the perfect guinea pig person to test out the VaporIron for HOTB. I’m very curious what Michelle will think of the VaporIron in comparison to her regular flat iron… We will find out soon!

Who Wore It Better: Ponytails

True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld looks so great with this side ponytail + loose waves at the Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon in Beverly Hills. She’s so adorable.

Also looking great in a ponytail, Petra Nemcova. She opted for a sleek pony at the Luca Luca Fall/Winter 2011 show during New York Fashion Week.

With a nod to Brigitte Bardot’s vampy style, Brooklyn Decker took the versatile ponytail in a much different direction at the Just Go With It premiere. She paired it with full curls, face framing bangs, and lots of volume.

Model Molly Sims kept her ponytail simple at the premier of Just Go With It–just a bit of wavy texture in the back and some height at the crown.

Who do you think pulled off the best red carpet ponytail? Hailee, Petra, Brooklyn, or Molly?

Pain Is Multi Faceted

Last night I got a migraine. My vision always gets screwy, and in my left eye everything looked like this ring from Five And Two. Pretty but painful. And scary. Whenever I get a migraine, I feel like I broke my brain.

Beer Vs Wang

Last night the unthinkable happened. Beer spilled all over my Alexander Wang Diego!

And on my lace-up wedge Madewell boots.
And on my jeans, my t-shirt, coat, scarf… Um, yeah. It was basically a beertastrophe.

When I came home, damp with beer and regret, I was sort of freaking  about having a permanent beer stain on my handbag. (Also worried about the boots, but seriously. WANG.) I forced myself to let both pieces dry over night to see the level of damage, and this morning I cleaned them with Apple Brand Leather Cleaner. They immediately looked like new! The beer stain is totally gone from both. I swear, Apple Leather Cleaner is magic!

I think this has a lot to do with the fact that I pre-treated both the handbag and the boots with Garde Rain Stain Repellent, though. I think it’s a two-step magic trick. But whatever the case, the beer stains are GONE. After the Apple Leather Cleaner dried, I sprayed them again with the Garde Stain Repellent. And made my husband promise to stop dumping beer on me.  ;)

You can find more information on both products from Apple Polishes’ website, including where to buy, but I got mine from Amazon.com.

Ashlee Super Platinum Pixie

I’m not a fan of Ashlee Simpson, but I love watching her hairstyle changes. If I was a super rich celeb, that’s what I’d do too. Mile long red extensions one week, platinum pixie the next. Why not.

Ashleeeeeeee was recently spotted leaving Andy Lecompte Salon in West Hollywood with a fresh cut and hair color taking her previous style, which she did this fall, even shorter and lighter. I really love this pixie cut–it’s well executed and the proportions are totally right. And the so-blonde-it’s-almost-white color really works with this cut. I kind of love it! But what do you guys think…
