The February issue of Allure says the shag is the new “it” hairstyle. You know, that choppy, layered hairstyle that was big on rock stars of the ’60s, Carol Brady in the ’70s, Joan Jett in the ’80s, and (thanks to Sally Hershberger) Meg Ryan in the ’90s. Freja Beha Erichsen made the shag relevant again in 2009 (above) by strutting down runways with a supermodely version of the messy ‘do.
And now Freja’s grown out shag is a symbol of the new, revamped shag. It’s an edgier, sexed-up version of the cut–kind of like a severely layered bob with bangs…
Complicating the issue, Carmen Kass‘ sliced up, layered cut is part of the new shag trend too. Carmen’s cut looks like a grown out pixie, but see all her layered length in the back? Shag! I think both Freja and Carmen look totally cool and very un-Florence Henderson, so I’m on board with this trend.
What do you think of the “new shag”?

I really like both. I had a cut almost exactly like the one on Carmen Kass about two years ago – but I never managed to make it look messy but not frumpy. Must be a trick to it…
Amy: I was just thinking that it’s probably hard to not make these shag looks appear cool and not soccer momish on real people who are not super models! Hmm…Maybe that’s the trick?
I love Carmen’s pixie shag or layered bob whatever one feels like calling this style. What’s old is always new, I experienced a slight resurgence in this haircut two years ago after Sally Hershberger appeared on Shear Genius in one of their challenges. Also the klute shag or some version of it has been popular within the emo community or the hipsters for some time. The Farrah Fawcett or gypsy shag is still beloved worldwide. Taylor Momsen’s haircut on the first season of Gossip Girl was a type of shag as well. This haircut just won’t go away.
Silas: I loved when Sally was on Shear Genius! And I totally remember that challenge. I’d forgotten about the Momsen shag though and it was a SHAG: http://bit.ly/h5lP8e
i love the grown out shaggy pixie look. super cute!
Brilliant innovation of style.
Wonderful!
The beauty of these women shines through despite their wretched haircuts. If trends are to celebrated then I’m ready to celebrate the upcoming trend where long *unlayered* hair (in other words, naturally beautiful) becomes the “it” style.
A man: wow, thanks for that!
judging from the first pictures of the shag do, it looks like a backdoor excuse to make all the rihanna/victoria pixie cut trend followers happy since they are probably now miserable from the long torturous grow-out process. I always thought of this length as the “annoying middle phase” length so i’m not as crazy about it. but i LOVE carmen’s bangs!
you go A Man!2 thumbs up for you!
Alexandra: so true–growing that cut out = hell. and it’s totally the annoying middle phase, funny that it’s a style. the bangs are hot though.
omgomgomg i have the shag cut! this is the first time in history i have every been ahead of a hair trend, kinda. yay!
i like the shag, only it’s proven to be pretty high maintenance. a lot of blow drying is involved for me. i tried to let mine air dry and look more shaggy, like the models above.. but it feels too redneck (my alabama roots speaking.)
kudos to my man oliver at dino clark, who wouldn’t tell me what kind of haircut he was giving me until it was done.
only now i want to grow my hair out a bit for my wedding party, and… it’s taking forever.
hiii lisa! wow, that is so brave to let your stylist cut your hair without knowing what he was doing! I love that. and I bet the cut looks awesome on you.
