Shear Genius Runner Up: Janine

Hair On The Brain: Congrats on making it to the top two! I was sad when you didn’t win. I’m sure you’re getting a lot of that today.

Janine Jarman: (Laughs) Yeah, I’m okay with it though. I’m just getting started.

HOTB: When you were standing in front of the judges with Brig, what were you thinking?

Janine: It was really kinda Twilight Zone-y. Because I had it all pictured in my mind that it would come down to me and Matthew and may the better person win. And I was like, huh, ok. I didn’t picture this! You just never know. I think at the end of the day, it definitely made for an interesting season and a very interesting end.

HOTB: Do you think the producers were looking for a conclusion to their underdog storyline with Brig?

Janine: I assume that because although her look was cool, she consistently didn’t do hair. It was like, well, that’s a cool hair accessory but… I don’t know. It’s hard. But at the end of the day, it’s a bunch of opinions. And I’m of the opinion that how I “played the game”—I didn’t go there to “play a game”. I went there to do the full-out, hardest work I’ve ever done. And that’s what I did. And if it got me second, then that’s what I deserved.

HOTB: In retrospect, is there anything that you would have done differently?

Janine: Oh my god, it haunts me daily. I’m perfectionist and an obvious overachiever, so everything that I didn’t win I’m like, what would I have done differently? Even stuff that I did win I’m like, how could I have made it better? So for me it was a really unique experience to be able to see my work play out Wednesday after Wednesday. And it’s been a really good reality check. It’s helped me become even better because I’m like, I need to push myself in this area; I need to do better at this…

HOTB: Are you glad you went on Shear Genius?

Janine: Oh, absolutely. For multiple reasons. The clients at my salon were so thrilled, the stylists were thrilled, and my family were beside themselves they were so excited. It’s been such a fun experience with all the people that are close to me. They really enjoyed watching me, were rooting for me, and were proud of me. My dad has only seen me cut his own hair, so for him to see me do runway hair… There would be years when I was traveling everywhere for work, and he never knew exactly what I was doing. He was like, I had no idea that’s what you do!

HOTB: It seemed like you were really yourself on the show and we’re playing the “reality show” game. I remember a conversation between you, Brian and Matthew where Brian said Brig was playing the game so hard…

Janine: My hat’s off to her. I stated in the last episode that I’m not very good at games. All I know how to do is work really hard and do my best. And if that didn’t make me a winner, than I don’t really know how else to do it. I don’t really watch reality TV. I mean, I’m from LA and I’ve worked on enough reality sets, so I know the stuff that goes down, so for me to go on the show I just stayed true to myself. I was like, I’m going to work my butt off, and hopefully it gets me all the way.

HOTB: Will you stay in touch with any of the other contestants?

Janine: Oh, absolutely. Matthew is coming to stay with me this weekend. His niece and my sister are in a cheer competition together this weekend, so we’re going to a cheer competition together! I also text back and forth with Jon, Arzo, and I talk to Faatemah all the time. Whenever I’m in New York I see Brian. I talk to Amy. So, yeah I made a lot of friends, which I didn’t expect to get that out of it. I feel like it’s just an extra bonus.

HOTB: Now that Shear Genius is over, what’s next for you?

Janine: I’m now working with Sebastian. I’m their West Coast spokesperson, so that’s super fun and exciting. There’s been a good amount of jobs coming my way. I’m staying really busy. And I’m getting married in June.

HOTB: Congratulations!

Janine: To date it’s probably one of the most exciting years of my life.

HOTB: I have one last questions super important question for you, which I’ve been wondering all season: How tall are you?

Janine: (Laughs) Or how short am I? I am 4’ 10 ½”. I am about the size of your average 12-year old.
